Having had time to settle after our 6 month bicycle tour of North America last year (toddlerontour.com), I’m starting to get itchy feet to get back on my bike more. Not that commuting by bike every day is me being a slouch. My main issue is lack of transport of the little guy. He’s getting a new bike for his birthday on August 13th, along with a trail gator so that I can tow him around; school runs, trips to the local shop, and hopefully some longer day trips.
However, on my rounds I’ve noticed for the past 2 weeks a skip outside a local nursery which had some cool little red trikes dumped in it. So, I couldn’t resist. However, I have since read that this is technically illegal. I have to say that worries me quite a bit, but then I’d much rather my little boy gets some use out of them than them end up in landfill or get melted down! Turns out they’re Winther Bikes, so whilst they’re in need of some TLC the built quality is v.good.
I’ve read quite a few articles on skip etiquette today, and it seems to be the case that whilst technically illegal it’s a bit of a grey area. I had a quick look to see if there was anyone around, but although the nursery doors were open I couldn’t see anyone to ask so figured what the heck.
The bigger trike was broken, i.e. without the front wheel. However, as you can see in the pic above I managed a quick repair using another older trike he has. We’ve since had loads of fun together scooting around the yard! The little trike is actually just a little bit too small for my 4 year old, so I might give it to friends with smaller kids or fix it up and give it to a charity shop. That will make be feel a little bit less guilty. What a rubbish law, it’s spoilt my day a bit.
The thing is, I’d be too embarrassed to ask to take something out of the skip during the day when there are loads of people around. I’ve never taken anything out of a skip before, and I’d feel really self conscious as though people would look down on me or something! So, would you take a punt like I did or would you just leave it?
